Father Jakob Gapp
July 26, 1897 – August 13, 1943
Beatified on November 24, 1996

Father Jakob Gapp was more than a priest—he was a rock in the tide of injustice. In an era when conformity and fear silenced many, his unshakeable faith gave him the strength to raise his voice. His life stands as an eternal monument to the resistance of conscience against tyranny.
His brave stand for truth and his uncompromising defense of human dignity, especially for his Jewish fellow citizens, made him a target of the Nazi regime. His famous sermon in Wattens was not an act of political agitation but a passionate plea for faith and reason amidst a sea of propaganda and hatred.
His escape into exile and subsequent arrest demonstrate the far-reaching reach of terror, which knew no national borders. Yet even the death sentence from the People's Court could not break his spirit. His martyrdom in Plötzensee crowned a life dedicated to the conviction that we must obey God rather than men.
Father Gapp reminds us that true faith is not comfortable. It challenges us to take a stand, to advocate for justice, and to remain human in the face of evil. His legacy is a bright light in one of history's darkest hours and a lasting mandate for us all.
His life was a testimony.
His death was a sacrifice.
His faith was his victory.
“We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
