As Chancellor of the First Republic, he dismantled parliamentary democracy in 1933/34, banned all political parties &ndash; including the Social Democratic Workers&rsquo; Party (SDAP) &ndash; and established an authoritarian regime known as Austro-fascism. The consequences were immediate and far-reaching: even in Hall in Tirol, long-serving and committed Social Democratic councillors were forced to relinquish their mandates overnight, replaced by supporters of the single party, the &ldquo;Fatherland Front&rdquo; (Vaterl&auml;ndische Front). A functioning democratic municipal politics came to an abrupt end &ndash; and, as we now know, ultimately paved the way for the National Socialists.<br /></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.ns-widerstand-hallintirol.com/uploads/1/4/4/3/144346304/published/engelbert-dollfuss.png?1757083615" alt="Picture" style="width:332;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="paragraph"><font size="2">Photo Dr. Engelbert Dollfuss (1933).
