Adolf Rauch was born in 1914 into a farming family in the Lechtal region of Tyrol. In 1926, he enrolled at the Franziskanergymnasium in Hall in Tirol, where he became a member of the Catholic student fraternity Nibelungia in 1931. After graduating in 1935, he completed his mandatory year of service in the Austrian Federal Army while simultaneously beginning his law studies at the University of Innsbruck. On October 17, 1935, he joined the Vindelicia student fraternity in Innsbruck.

In March 1938, Rauch actively resisted Nazi encroachment on Vindelicia. To protect the fraternity’s heritage, he smuggled its banner and valuables in a large suitcase to his family’s farm in Lechtal, hiding them under a haystack. However, the act was betrayed, leading to his arrest in Innsbruck that autumn. He faced:

• A ban on education
• Detention under SS guard, who escorted him to Elbigenalp to confiscate the hidden items
• A miraculous release after the head of the SS commission—a former comrade from his army service—intervened

In 1945, Rauch escaped from a Yugoslav partisan prison camp and returned to Tyrol. He passed away on September 15, 2006, in Innsbruck at age 93.
