Digital Biographical Archive of the National Socialism Resistance in Tyrol
- The Digital Biographical Archive of the National socialism Resistance in Tyrol is a scholarly documentation and remembrance platform dedicated to preserving the life stories of those women and men who resisted the National Socialist regime or suffered persecution during this period.
- The archive researches and publishes biographical contributions based on historical sources, archival materials, photographs, and personal memories. Through cooperation with archives and family members, previously little-known life stories are brought to light and preserved permanently for the public.
- Every biography tells an individual story – and at the same time, a part of Tyrol’s history. Together, these life stories contribute to preserving historical memory and strengthening awareness of courage, civil courage, and humanity.
History consists not only of the names we know. It also consists of the people whose courage has almost been forgotten. Every researched biography expands our historical knowledge and helps preserve the memory of courage, civil bravery, and humanity for generations to come.
National Socialism and Resistance in Hall in Tyrol: Preserving History, Strengthening Democracy
In Hall in Tyrol, women and men resisted the National Socialist regime of injustice – with courage, determination, and often at the risk of their own lives. They fought against oppression and discrimination, against war and violence, and for a free and just society. Their resistance was part of a broader movement that rose up against the Nazi regime across Austria.
The motives of those who resisted were diverse: some acted out of political conviction, others out of moral responsibility, or out of a refusal to stand by in silence while others suffered. What united them was a shared determination to bring down the National Socialist regime and to defend humanity against barbarism.

Can We Learn from History?
This question stays with us to this day. The oft-cited answer is: the only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from it. And yet there is another lesson – one that does not resign itself, but calls us to action: we must tell the stories of the past. For only those who remember can protect democracy and secure a lasting peace.

A Virtual Exhibition – Documented for the First Time
This digital biographical archive commemorates the resistance against National Socialism in Tyrol and Hall in Tyrol—honoring both individuals, women and men alike, and organized resistance groups. In digital form, a virtual exhibition is taking shape here, bringing the historical sites of resistance to life and incorporating personal interviews about family histories.
This project represents the first scholarly examination of resistance and persecution in Hall in Tyrol. It constitutes a long-overdue act of remembrance—and a testament to the fact that these people will not be forgotten.

My name is Elisabeth Walder. My research focuses on the digital biographical archive of National Socialism in Tyrol, with a particular emphasis on my hometown, Hall in Tyrol—a place that holds a deeply personal significance in my work.
I live in Hall with my husband and studied History and European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck (Leopold-Franzens-Universität). I am currently pursuing further studies in Classica et Orientalia, specializing in Near Eastern Archaeology.
Since 2020, I have been leading the citizen science project NS-Widerstand Hall in Tirol (Resistance against National Socialism in Hall in Tyrol). In this role, I curate the accompanying digital biographical archive of National Socialism in Tyrol and Hall, and I realized a memorial plaque for 237 victims and persecuted individuals at Franz-Reinisch-Platz 1 in Hall. My research has been published in two recent volumes: my study KZ-Dachau Häftlingsnummer 14354 (on D. Ernst Verdross) appeared in Innsbruck in October 2025, and I also contributed to Alexander Zanesco (ed.), Forum Hall in Tyrol. New Perspectives on the History of the City (Vol. 5), Hall in Tyrol 2025, pp. 382–400.

What this digital biographical archive of national socialism is about
At the core of this digital biographical archive lie the history of National Socialism in Tyrol and Hall, the fates of its victims and persecuted individuals, and the diverse forms of resistance that emerged in response. My goal is to render historical developments tangible, to preserve individual life stories, and to foster a critical engagement with both regional history and the culture of remembrance.
